Dear members of the Committee on Planning,
I'm writing regarding home sharing in the bill. 108 that's before you.
I moved from Boulder Co where I worked for years in local government as an administrator.
Boulder has a short term rental licensing program.
Some things that struck me here is how difficult it is to figure out how to do legitimate home
sharing.
The discussion seems very polarized here and leaves out many of the favorable aspects.
People have many reasons and circumstances for doing home sharing. Sometimes it's a
temporary fix and would not put ,more rentals in the long term rental market. Sometimes it can
be altruistic to give visitors a great travel experience- I'm a traveler and do love that aspect.
Renting a home or ohana can be a much better travel experience than a hotel room. I prefer it
when I travel. Everyone doesn't though so there's no harm to hotels.
According to the Hawaii Tourism Authority, it generates more than $5.1 billion in economic
impact for the state and is responsible for 34,000 jobs while allowing local residents to
generate extra revenue to help deal with the high cost of living.
