To Whom It May Concern:
Thank you for taking the time to hear the voices of our community on the matter of Short
Term Vacation Rentals in our County, and how it effects the full term residents of our
communities.
I have been a resident of Hawaii for 33 years. Being a part of this community teaches you
the true meaning of aloha, and how to be a part of a community, how to be a good neighbor,
how to be an Aunty or an Uncle to children unrelated to you, and how to be blessed by
Aunty's and Uncle's you never knew you had.
I feel our neighborhoods shifting as of late, as we have gone from fewer and fewer full time
renters, to more and more short term vacation renters. Our sense of community is
disappearing. We now live next door to a rotating door of full time vacationers, people that
have no regard to the people living next door who are living their every day life, who make
Hawai'i, a land we respect, our home. For our elderly trying to relax during the day at home,
for our small business owners who work from their homes in peace and quite, for our
students trying to get homework done in the afternoon or go to bed at a reasonable time for
school the next morning, for our workers who work the graveyard shift and are hoping to
sleep in in the morning before work again, for our new born babies trying to nap during the
day or sleep through the night, for our home owners who have worked so hard to afford their
home who want to enjoy a quiet family dinner.
I personally live next door to a short term vacation rental home that has 3 bedrooms, a large
lanai, and swimming pool and jacuzzi. There are renters who let their children play loudly
in the pool at 6am. There are renters who play loud music all day long. There are renters
who party late into the night, every night. And when asked if they could have some
consideration of their neighbors in regard to their noise levels, their reply is, "I'm on
vacation."
Beyond the noise, my private road is more heavily driven, and the traffic makes me nervous
for the children and pets in our household.
I've also looked into renting in different neighborhoods. The price of rent has risen to
astronomical rates since the short term rental craze gripped our islands. Families who live
here part time are struggling to provide a nice home for themselves andmake ends meet. I'd
like to see the price of rent fall to where the residents of Hawaii can afford it again.
Our neighborhoods are becoming hotels. And if I wanted to live next door to a hotel, I
wouldn't be living in the neighborhood I live in. ,s • IV

I would like to see an end to short term vacation rentals in residential neighborhoods. For
f the sake of our community, our children, and our 'aina.
