I support Bill 108 as it's currently proposed by Council Members Daren Boff and Dru Mamo
Kanuha. If there is a need to regulate Short -Term Vacation Rentals then Bill 108 is fair. Short -
Tern -i- Vacation Rentals are needed in Hawaii County to support the visitors coning here and
give them alternative options to resorts. Some of these guests are local, corning from other parts
of Hawaii County or the outer island. They have huge financial benefits to our community that is
shared by government through taxes, restaurants, shopping, tours, local landscapers, cleaners,
etc. To say mainland investors are taking all the profits is ignorant and false. Rents paid is _just a
portion of the income created by short-term vacation rentals. Visitors here on vacation spend
money. Prohibiting short-term vacation rentals is bad for local people and good for the big
corporate hotels and resorts. Those are the mainland investors monopolizing tourism and taking
money out of Hawaii.
We have a short term rental and multiple long term rentals in the Agricultural District. As its
currently proposed Bill 108 will allow me to keep our existing short-term rental and be in
compliance by obtaining a nonconforming certificate. Our short-term rental is a huge help to us
financially and it will be a hardship if vire are not allowed to keep it. I find it discouraging and
discriminating that short-term rentals are having to be defended to be allowed and in compliance
while long term rentals in the same Agricultural District are acceptable. If all rentals were
regulated according to their districts, Hawaii County would have a huge housing crisis. Keeping
my short-term rental is a priority for ane and it allows our friends and family a place to stay when
they come and visit. Our long term rentals are better suited for long term tenants.
I support Bill 108 as it's currently written and proposed, further regulations would be detrimental
to our community and Hawaii County. Short-term vacation rentals have many positive aspects
and create many jobs.
