Aloha,
We are not against vacation rental units in our community. Many owners are law abiding and
tax paying. We simply want to see those that do not actively manage their units and have
raging parties in once quiet residential communities have to have a penalty- fines perhaps,
when police are called one too many times. We want to see owners monitored to ensure they
are paying what is owed to maintain our community by visitors (GE and TAT taxes). It's
baffling as to why people can and do get away with operating noisy rentals, and no one is
minding the store. Why not have a permit system that also tracks how many noise violations
are reported, as well ensuring that quarterly taxes are being paid by that permit owner?
Our neighborhood is frustrated by the lack of oversight of this booming industry in our once
quiet neighborhood. Legitimate, honest, tax paying vacation rental owners are being punished
by the 'cheaters' who dodge taxes by large vacation rental agencies that will not require owners
to have taxes withheld/remitted to the county/state. Please do the right thing and hold
everyone accountable for the business they conduct- noise rules, taxes, etc. It's unfair to
everyone else who does the right thing.
Mahalo,
J. Mears
