REPORT OF THE
COMMITTEE ON FINANCE
DATE: May 8, 2018 Re: Comm. No. 908/Res. No. 601-18
PLACE: Council Chambers
Kailua-Kona, Hawai`i
TIME: 10:30 a.m.
Council Chair and Members
Hawai`i County Council
Hilo, Hawai`i 96720
Your Committee on Finance, to which was referred Resolution No. 601-18, reports as follows:
Resolution 601-18, transmitted by Finance Director Deanna S. Sako, via Communication No. 908
dated April 20, 2018, authorizes the Mayor to enter into a Revocable Non-Exclusive Right-of-Entry
Agreement with the State of Hawai`i, Comptroller, Department of Accounting and General Services,
for the maintenance of the King Kamehameha the Great statue located in Kapa`au, North Kohala,
Island of Hawaii.
This agreement would allow the State to enter onto County property to assume maintenance of the
statue, which is currently provided through community efforts.
Council Member Dru Mamo Kanuha made a motion to amend Resolution 601-18 with the content of
Communication 908.1.
Council Chair Maile David clarified that the amendment was requested to correct the spelling of statute
to statue and adding the okina in Kapa`au within the title of the resolution.
Council Member Herbert "Tim" Richards, III, commented that the statue in Kapa`au is the original
statue. It is a challenge because the statue gets painted every ten years. Mr. Richards has been told that
this process is upwards of$40,000. The King Kamehameha statue is a state treasure and it makes
sense to have this relationship with the State.
Your Committee on Finance is in accord with the purpose and intent of Resolution No. 601-18, as
amended to Draft 2, and recommends its adoption.
dmm
AYES NOES ABS EX Respectfully submitted,
CHUNG X
DAVID X COMMITTEE ON FINANCE
EOFF X
KANUHA X
LEE LOY X
O HARA X Ofir4W
POINDEXTER X MAILE DAVID, CHAIR
RICHARDS X FC REPORT NO.: 116
RUGGLES X ADOPTED: MAY 2 1 2018
