REPORT OF THE <br /> COMMITTEE ON AGRICULTURE, WATER AND <br /> ENERGY SUSTAINABILITY <br /> DATE: May 21, 2018 Re: Communication No. 930 <br /> PLACE: Council Chambers <br /> Hilo, Hawai`i <br /> TIME: 9:05 a.m. <br /> Council Chair and Members <br /> Hawai`i County Council <br /> Hilo, Hawai`i 96720 <br /> Your Committee on Agriculture, Water and Energy Sustainability, to which was referred <br /> Communication No. 930, reports as follows: <br /> Communication No. 930, transmitted by Managing Director Wilfred M. Okabe, dated May 3, 2018, <br /> nominates Kean T. Umeda of Council District 2 to the County of Hawai`i Game Management Advisory <br /> Commission. Motion to approve nomination of Kean T. Umeda was made by Council Member Kanuha; <br /> seconded by Council Member Eoff. <br /> As introduced by Ms. Rose Bautista, Executive Assistant for Mayor Harry Kim, Mr. Umeda is a self- <br /> employed gunsmith, a previous Assistant Golf Pro at the Mauna Lani Resort, and has coached air riflery <br /> at both Waiakea and Hilo High schools. His focused interest is preserving hunting for future <br /> generations. Mr. Umeda is not affiliated with any political party, and if confirmed,he will fill a term <br /> ending December 31, 2022. <br /> Nominee Umeda was present and thanked the Committee for the opportunity to serve. He noted his <br /> passion for teaching the youth how to hunt, with hopes to keep them off of the violent video games, <br /> which in turn could curb violent criminal activity as seen in our state, our country and the world. <br /> Nominee Umeda looks forward to working with the commission and the community. <br /> Council Member Chung and Council Chair Poindexter both verbally acknowledged their support of <br /> Nominee Umeda, stating that he also provides the diving aspect of game management to the <br /> commission, and that his public services speak volumes towards his commitment to this commission and <br /> its goals. <br /> Committee Chair Richards thanked Nominee Umeda for his willingness to serve, and provided his <br /> support stating that Nominee Umeda's experience can provide the balance needed going forward for this <br /> commission. Committee Chair Richards advised that due to Nominee Umeda's appearance and <br /> approval today, it was not required for him to attend the upcoming confirmation Council meeting. <br /> AWESC Report No.5 <br />
