Council Chair and Members
Hawai`i County Council
Hilo, Hawai`i 96720
Your Committee on Public Safety and Mass Transit, to which was referred Communication No. 928,
reports as follows:
Communication No. 928, transmitted by Managing Director Wilfred Okabe, dated May 2, 2018,
nominates Allen Salavea of Council District 6 to the Liquor Commission. Mr. Salavea is currently
employed as the Kamehameha Schools Land Use and Entitlement Manager. Prior to his employment
with the Kamehameha Schools, Mr. Salavea worked as a Planner with the County of Hawai`i's Planning
Department for approximately four years.
Mr. Salavea holds a Bachelor of Arts degree in Geography and a certificate in Environmental Planning
from the University of Hawai`i at Hilo and served six years in the United States Air Force, where he was
honorably discharged. He has lived in Hawai`i for approximately 25 years and states he is not affiliated
with any political party; if confirmed, he will serve a term ending December 31, 2022.
Mr. Salavea was present in the Hilo Council Chambers, and several Council Members spoke in support
of his appointment to the Liquor Commission, and also spoke well of his community service. Chair
Ruggles informed Mr. Salavea that he does not have to be present at the next Council meeting for
confirmation of his appointment.
Your Committee on Public Safety and Mass Transit is in accord with the purpose and intent of
Communication No. 928, and recommends confirmation of the appointment of Allen Salavea to the
Liquor Commission.
