STATE OF HAWAII <br /> %...:.>4.-i--..OF NA.._.- <br /> RESOLUTION NO. 626 18 <br /> A RESOLUTION TRANSFERRING/APPROPRIATING AN APPROPRIATION OUT <br /> AND FROM A DESIGNATED FUND ACCOUNT AND CREDITING SAME TO A <br /> DESIGNATED FUND ACCOUNT TO ASSIST THE DEPARTMENT OF PARKS AND <br /> RECREATION WITH EXPENSES RELATING TO MEAL SERVICE FOR THE <br /> EVACUEES OF THE LAVA ERUPTION IN LOWER PUNA. <br /> WHEREAS, on May 1, 2018,the United State Geological Survey and the Hawai`i <br /> Volcano Observatory issued a report that a migration of seismicity and deformation downrift <br /> (east) of Pu'u `O`o indicated that a large area along the East Rift Zone is potentially at risk of <br /> new outbreak, possibly in the Lower Puna area; and <br /> WHEREAS, on May 3, 2018, steam and lava emissions emerged from fissures in the <br /> area of Mohala Street, which is located in the Leilani Estates subdivision; and <br /> WHEREAS, since the first eruption, numerous fissures have developed causing <br /> eruptions of lava and dangerous gasses in various locations of lower Puna, including the Leilani <br /> Estates and Lanipuna Gardens subdivisions; and <br /> WHEREAS, due to these threats to structures and human health, the Civil Defense <br /> Agency has mandated evacuations, displacing hundreds of residents, many of which are now <br /> taking refuge at the Pahoa Community Center and the Kea`au Community Center evacuation <br /> shelters; and <br /> WHEREAS, the Department of Parks and Recreation is requesting reimbursement <br /> assistance to defray the cost of providing three meals per day for evacuees currently residing in <br /> the shelters; now, therefore, <br /> BE IT RESOLVED BY THE COUNCIL OF THE COUNTY OF HAWAII that <br /> Contingency Relief funds from Council District 9 will be appropriated to the Department of <br /> Parks and Recreation to assist with expenses relating to meal service for the evacuees currently <br /> residing at the Pahoa Community Center and the Kea'au Community Center evacuation shelters. <br /> BE IT FURTHER RESOLVED that the Council of the County of Hawai`i hereby <br /> transfers/appropriates the following amount as set forth below: <br />
