Council Members: I am writing this email to register my strenuous objection to the proposal to
locate a sewer treatment project on the Sousa property adjoining Na'alehu School. I recognize the
incentive for action on addressing this problem, but I do not understand your methods. Your
meeting scheduled this Tuesday during the early morning hours precludes comments from teachers
and administration from commenting due the fact they are in class. It seems to me their'opinion
would be of value in making your decision.
I did not become aware of this scheduled meeting until I saw it in Friday's Ka'u Calendar. No one I
spoke with, including the principal of the elementary school, was aware of the public meeting. This
is suspicious behavior and supports a strong opinion, expressed at the public meeting in April, that a
decision has already been made. At the meeting I attended no one, except one individual,
supported the proposal. There were cultural objections as well as issues of trade winds blowing
toward the school, and the disrespectful treatment of the Sousa family by threatening acquisition of
their property by eminent domain that caused public dabate. There was testimony about a similar
plant built in Honoka'a and it was represented that the smell was remarkable.
One attendee asked why a two hundred acre property directly makai of the Camp might be a
suitable location. The engineers did not give a suitable response why this property was not under
consideration.
The public hearing in April produced an emphatic rejection of the proposal. I am disheartened to
hear that the project is still being considered by the County and possibly the State. If this is true, I
ask for your reconsideration,
