Subject: Opposition to Naalehu Wastewater Treatment Plant next to Elementary School
Dear County Council,
As a life resident of the Ka'u District and Principal of Na'alehu Elementary School, I oppose the location of
the Wastewater Treatment Plant for Na'alehu. I oppose any location that has the potential of negative
impact on the learning environment of students and staff of Na'alehu Elementary School.
Na'alehu Elementary School is one of only 2 public schools in Ka'u. Naalehu Elementary School services
students from Ocean View Estates to Na'alehu Town, and all the communities in between, nearly 400
students, pre-school through sixth grade. After sixth grade, majority of the students of Na'alehu
Elementary School (NES) then go to Ka'u High School, the only high school in the district. NES has
nearly 400 students. We have approximately 75 employees.
The Wastewater Treatment Plant can have long term negative impact across the district of Ka'u, and the
future of its community if it has any adverse effect on the learning environment of children. We cannot
take this risk. We have a major concern that our already fragile air quality will have permanent odor,
regardless of what is being proposed and presented in the planning of this wastewater treatment plant.
The children of NES already have many challenges-- a community of high poverty, lack of resources,
remoteness, community challenges, S02/air quality, etc. My students do not need an additional
challenge which is deliberately approved, planned, and built by our own government entities.
No answer is acceptable when students ask why people want to build it (a wastewater treatment plant) so
close to their playground and classrooms.
