As a 7 year resident of the Ka'u District and a staff member of Na'alehu
Elementary School, I oppose the location of the Wastewater Treatment Plant for
Na'alehu. I oppose any location that has the potential of negative impact on the
learning environment of students and staff of Na'alehu Elementary School.
Na'alehu Elementary School is one of only 2 public schools in Ka'u. Na'alehu
Elementary School services students from Ocean View Estates to Na'alehu Town,
and all the communities in between, nearly 400 students, pre-school through sixth
grade and we also employ approximately 75 employees.
The Wastewater Treatment Plant can have long term negative impact across the
district of Ka'u, and the future of its community if it has any adverse effect on
the learning environment of children. We cannot take this risk. We have a major
concern that our already fragile air quality will have permanent odor, regardless of
what is being proposed and presented in the planning of this wastewater treatment
plant. My sister lives in Ewa Beach close (10 minute drive) to the Honouliuli
Wastewater Treatment Plant and the smell coming from the treatment is very
noticeable and foul. The children of NES already have many challenges-- a
community of high poverty, lack of resources, remoteness, community challenges,
502/air quality, etc. Our students do not need an additional challenge which is
deliberately approved, planned, and built by our own government entities.
What do we tell our students when they ask why people want to build it (a
wastewater treatment plant) so close to their playground and classrooms.
