Re: Operating Budget
The County of Hawai`i has been awarded $145,000 in state funds from the Hawaii Tourism
Authority. These funds will be used to develop and implement the Hawai`i County Ho`okaulike
Signage Project. Resolution 631-18 authorized the County to enter into and agreement to accept
these funds.
Enclosed is a bill for an ordinance amending the Operating Budget by appropriating this $145,000

A. REQUEST:
Resolution No. 631-18 authorized the County to enter into an agreement to accept funds from the Hawaii
Tourism Authority to develop and implement the Hawaii County Hookaulike Signage Project. This is a
request to appropriate funds in the amount of$145,000.00 for this agreement.
B. BACKGROUND AND JUSTIFICATION (USE ADDITIONAL SHEETS AS NEEDED):
A goal of the Department of Research and Development Tourism Program is to increase communication,
interaction and understanding between industry stakeholders, residents and the visitor industry, and ensure
the integrity of our unique sense of place and appropriate recognition of our host culture. The Hookaulike
Signage Project will provide Hawaii Island parks, trails and beaches with interpretive signs that will educate
visitors and residents, and share safety information. The signs will include a QR code that provides
translation into languages that support the County and the Hawaii Tourism Authority (HTA) global markets
such as simplified and traditional Chinese, Japanese, Korean, German and Hawaiian. Approximately 50
signs on Hawaii Island trails, parks and beaches throughout the Hawaii county.
