Vacation Rental Next Door
The home next door to us is now a vacation rental. There is no onsite house manager. Renters just
arrive, party day and night disrupting the normal peace and quiet of our neighborhood, then leave.
In fact this home has been used several times as a party, house by the family of the "property
manager". (Most recently just yesterday). I am quite sure that you would not want to live next door
to this.
At first I was mad and then I was sad ... then I got busy to try to actually DO SOMETHING to remedy
this obtrusive situation next door. I began to do some investigating on my own. I have found the
following information:
1. Property manager does not have a valid Hawaii State Real Estate or Broker's License.
2. Property owner has not been paying his fair share of property taxes. (He claims home
owner exemption and he has never lived here).
3. Property owner has no record of GET and TAT tax license and/or payments for vacation
rentals.
4. Property has a cesspool approved for one bedroom. Property has five bedrooms and can
accommodate 17 people.
5. Property is zoned AG and conducting such a business requires a special permit according to
state laws. No special permit has been granted.
The items outlined above have been reported to the responsible agencies.
Items 1, 2 and 3 are currently under investigation.
Item 4 was reported. I was told that this complaint was not under the DOH's scope.
Item 5 has been reported TWICE. Both times it was denied despite the attached supporting
documents of SS205-6, SS205-12 and SS205-2. I also requested a review by the Corporate Council
on the second complaint form.
PLEASE do something to help us! Not regulating this "industry" that is being conducted within
regular neighborhoods is a travesty. As you can see above, just this one case shows disregard for the
laws that you and I follow.
Support Bill 108 in one form or another. Deny unsupervised vacation rental homes or make home
owners, property managers and the appropriate agencies ACCOUNTABLE.
Sincerely,
Carol Fuller Scott Fuller
