Dear Committee on Planning Hawaii County,
I am writing to you in regards to Bill 10K My husband, Josh, & I have been entrepreneurs in
Hawaii for well over 20 years now. We have since raised 3 boys who have gone off to college.
Due to the high cost of living in Hawaii, Josh and I decided to supplement our income (He is a
painting contractor) by investing in a vacation rental that we built ourselves, which is located
right next door to where we currently have resided since 1997.
From the moment we listed our property on Airbnb, we have been very successful with having
a constant flow of renters, both from Hawaii, the United States & all over the world. The
income that is generated from this has greatly improved our lives & also the lives of others.
Our income goes right back into our community from the taxes with pay to the state as well as
through our support we give to our local businesses.
We both strongly feel that not only do we help provide a beautiful & safe place for visitors to
stay (Being that we have very limited hotel accommodations here on the East side of the Big
Island) but we also help generate revenue that also helps our community & makes it more
viable place to live.
Having our vacation rental, the Bird's Nest, available for visitors has been a great success in
making their vacation here on the Big Island a fun & positive vacation remember forever.
