Dear Committee on Planning Hawaii County,
Dear legislators, I urge you to grandfather vacation rentals in areas that have not seen
significant complaints, such as the Hilo side of the island agricultural areas. I own a vacation
rental in Orchidland and have never received any complaints or even heard of any neighbors
complaining. These are three acre ag lots with actual agriculture happening on some of the
lots, as well as regular homes, so a small vacation rental in areas like this is clearly not the
target of this bill. I urge you to consider regional differences in Hawaii County as you finalize
the bill. I also strongly urge you to consider the impacts of the eruptions on income potential
for Puna residents and how this bill may exacerbate those issues. It seems that it would be
prudent to delay passage of this bill until the dust has settled and officials can better assess the.
long-term impacts of the eruption on Puna and the island as a whole. For example, the national
park is still closed and may be closed indefinitely, removing a massive source of income from
tourism for island residents. Losing the ability to earn income from vacation rentals may be a
double or triple whammy for many rental owners already reeling.
