Dear Committee on Planning Hawaii County,
I am writing you in response to Bill 108. I have lived here in Kona for 33.5 years and survived
the fiasco of 2008 -2011 by using my nearly foreclosed home as a vacation rental. I have
always paid my taxes for doing business as a vacation rentals and will continue to. However as
I get old ( 63 next month) I do not want to loose the opportunity to have my home my primary
residence create an on going income for me. I do not believe Hawaii has that right to tell
homeowners how they should use their homes. If we were able to ADUs on small than I OK sq
ft lots I would create more rentals. Hawaii has to change. The people who live here are having
enough difficulty with poor air due to VOG, the economic slump as well as the lack of
affordable rentals to help those who choose to live on this island.
Truthfully, I choose vacation rentals over longterm because of the tenant laws. I have nice
people who follow th ehouse rules, drive nice new cars, are quiet and respectful. Once a
longterm renter enters the picture there wear and tear, the treatment is not as nice they are loud
because all of a sudden they think have the right to behave any way they want. I think the
counsel needs to look into the houses that have 3-4 generations living under one roof who
could care less about how their house looks or how loud they get. In our neighborhood we are
being held hostage by a household like that...
Enough about that...
There are cheaper more convenient and advance places to live, though some of us choose to
stay. We raised our families here. We created our work here and many of us have worked hard
to support the growth of this island. Now as we become elderly added income is important to
maintain even the most basic of lifestyles as well as the property.
