Airbnb has provided our community with an opportunity to host guests from all over the
world, while helping to make ends meet. There are simply not enough hotel rooms here on the
Big island, and with Mauna Lani Hotel slated to close this October for considerable
renovations, there is a serious shortage of accommodations for visitors. The ability to host
these visitors also provides many in our community a way to make ends meet. With rising
expenses and taxes, there is, in many cases, very little disposable income left.
In Japan, I have heard that vacation rentals in residential areas are limited to 180 days and that
property managers or the owner must live within 800 meters of the rental..... Perhaps this can
be also be a consideration but please do not take away a source of revenue for both an owner
and the state (from TAT and GET)
