Aloha,
I am writing to you folks in response to Bill 108. I am deeply concerned about this bill and
my livelihood. I live here and I have had to rent my own residential home out as a short
term rental in order to make ends meet and keep it at one point. I did not break any'of my
associations rules in doing so and I pay all my GET and TAT taxes.
I worked for many years for other peoples vacation rentals as a housekeeper. I was
fortunate enough to be able to buy a condo and I now rent it out as a vacation rental. I
clean it and produces income for me. Since I have worked for myself ( as many of us do
here in this state) there is no big social security check or 401k waiting. Just this investment
I made and that I work with all my heart. I think the annual $500.00 fee is too high for local
residents. Most of us are living paycheck to paycheck. I would hope that you folks would
consider a lower or no fee for locals who live here and pass these higher fees on to out of
state and out of country owners of short term rentals.
I also think being available within 1 hour is not feasible. What if I am in Hilo or Volcano? It
is more than an hour drive. Am I not allowed to leave the island, ever?
I think you should consider the many negative facets of this bill and how it is going to
impact so many people when making this decision for us. This bill in its current state will
hurt me and many other local residents now and it will hurt me later as I hope to retire one
day. Please consider revising this bill to help your constituents that live here.
Mahalo,
Vicki Vaughan
