SUBJECT: TRAFFIC CODE AMENDMENT:
HAUOLA ROAD/POHAKEA ROAD — NEW STOP INTERSECTION
We request the Hawai'i County Code, Chapter 24, Article 10, Division 2 (Moving
Vehicles), Section 24-264, Schedule 12 (Stop intersections), paragraph (a) Hamakua be
amended by adding new item:
"HAUOLA ROAD, POHAKEA ROAD INTERSECTION, ALL APPROACHES."
The intent of this amendment is to address a concern that motorists traveling southwest
(mauka) on Pohakea Road have difficulty seeing to the left and exiting at the Hauola
Road intersection. This problem is caused by cars parking too close to the intersection
and loading/unloading activities by an area business. The local community police
officer has suggested the conversion of this intersection to an all-way stop to help
reduce accidents.

The proposed all-way stop will allow for cars to still park along Hauola Road and
minimize the line of sight requirements at the intersection.
