RESOLUTION NO. SSI. i
A RESOLUTION TRANSFERRING/APPROPRIATING AN APPROPRIATION OUT
AND FROM A DESIGNATED FUND ACCOUNT AND CREDITING SAME TO A
DESIGNATED FUND ACCOUNT TO PROVIDE A GRANT TO THE HAWAII
ISLAND PORTGUESE CHAMBER OF COMMERCE CULTURAL AND
EDUCATIONAL CENTER FOR THE 140TH ANNIVERSARY OF THE ARRIVAL OF
THE FIRST PORTUGUESE IMMIGRANT FAMILIES TO HAWAII.
WHEREAS, the Hawai`i Island Portuguese Chamber of Commerce Cultural and
Educational Center (HIPCCCEC) is a 501(c)(3) nonprofit organization that was formed to
promote and sustain the Portuguese culture and heritage; and
WHEREAS, the HIPCCCEC will be celebrating the 140th anniversary of the arrival of
the first Portuguese immigrant families to Hawai`i during the month of September 2018,
throughout Hawai`i Island; and
WHEREAS, traveling island-wide presentations that will be free to the public will be
held in Kona, Ka`u, Honoka`a, and Hilo to showcase Portuguese history and culture, music,
food, fashion shows, and other exhibits of its rich heritage; and
WHEREAS, a blessing and groundbreaking will also take place on September 30, 2018,
at the Center's Site, with a reception to follow at Aunty Sally Kaleohano's Luau Hale that will
also be free to the public; and
WHEREAS, the HIPCCCEC is requesting funds for the blessing and groundbreaking
ceremony, travel/accommodations, rental fees, and other related expenses for these island-wide
presentations to commemorate the 140th anniversary of the arrival of the first Portuguese
immigrant families to Hawai`i; and
WHEREAS, one of the goals of the Department of Research and Development is to
develop a community-based visitor industry that ensures authenticity, and connects activities and
attractions to a sense of past and future place, such as the 2018 commemoration of the
140th anniversary of the arrival of the first Portuguese immigrant families to Hawai`i; and
WHEREAS, pursuant to Section 2-139(a)(2)(A) of the Hawai`i County Code,
Contingency Relief funds shall be transferred to an accepting County department/agency via
resolution identifying the nonprofit organization and the specific program, project, event,
activity, service, equipment,materials, or supplies for which the grant shall be used; now,
therefore,
BE IT RESOLVED BY THE COUNCIL OF THE COUNTY OF HAWAII that
Contingency Relief funds from Council District 1 will be appropriated to the Department of
Research and Development to provide a grant to the Hawai`i Island Portuguese Chamber of
Commerce Cultural and Educational Center to assist with the 2018 commemoration of the
140th anniversary of the arrival of the first Portuguese immigrant families to Hawai`i.
BE IT FURTHER RESOLVED that the Council of the County of Hawai`i hereby
transfers/appropriates the following amount as set forth below:

BE IT FINALLY RESOLVED that the County Clerk shall transmit a copy of this
resolution to the Director of Research and Development and Director of Finance, and that the
Director of Finance is hereby authorized to make the necessary transfers in accordance with the
terms of this resolution.
