Aloha County Council and All Concerned,
I am a 20 year resident of District 2 just above downtown and a member of Na Hoa Holomoku
Sailing Club located at Hilo Bayfront. Over the past six years, our family has benefitted
greatly from the very inexpensive service provided by the Sailing Club. We, along with many
of our friends and their children, have learned so much about sailing as well as very valuable
ocean safety and life skills. We have cultivated life-long friends and knowledge and training
with the club. It would be tragic to have this service end.
Similar to the Canoe Clubs,Na Hoa Holomuku can only function with on-site housing for the
boats at the beach. It is too costly and not feasible to house the boats off-site and still maintain
the function of the sailing club days.
I am writing to you all today to urge you all to recognize the huge importance this Sailing Club has on many of our
families and our community. I encourage you all to please help facilitate a Memorandum of Understanding between
the Sailing Club and Parks&Recreation so that they can be housed on the beach into the future.
Na Hoa Holomoku sailing club absolutely enriches and enhances the value of Hilo and the
Bayfront area. Leaders and members help to keep the area clean and are responsible and
respectful of the area and laws. The presence of the Sailing Club deters some of the vagrancy
in the area. The Sailing Club is extremely respectful of the paddling community as to not
interfere with their practice schedule and regatta events.
Please support us with an MOU and the continuation of such a rich hands-on, outdoor learning
opportunities for our children and community.
This sailing club is one of Hilo's most prized treasures.
Sincerely, Laura Acasio
