We have been members of the Na Hoa Holomoku sailing club for 13 years. We have watched the club grow into umC
amazing sailing facility for the Hilo community. We are blue water sailors who have sailed across the Pacific to a
many of the Pacific Islands north and south. There is"no"sailing club in our experience that matches the dedicati6 D
the organization, low cost, community served, sailing club like NHH.One of the biggest assets Na Hoa Holomoke. —
club offers is the availability of many small boats that novice sailors can sail and learn on.Many of these boats have
been bought with club members own funds in order to provide an ease to teach sailing in Hawaii. No other club in
this state is so accessible to the common man, woman, and child. Most sailing clubs/yacht clubs are very expensive
and out of reach of the community.
I have lived in the Pacific islands for over 30 years and know how sailing is a tradition of island people..lust as
canoe paddling has traditionally been how local people got around to provide for their families. Many Pacific islands
still live this way.(Micronesia is an example.)Having an accessible sailing club provides our youth with an
opportunity to learn and contribute to an ancient culture that has been a part of the Pacific for 100's of years.
As a member of Na Hoa Holomoku I personally cannot understand why our county would not be in favor of a
Memorandum of Understanding to keep our club where it has been for years.Tourists that come to Hilo and watch
the sail boats out on the Bay brings a charm,a view of Pacific Island culture. The canoes bring the same charm with
their canoe houses on the beach.I hope the County Council Members notice how delightful it is to go by the beach
and see the masts of sailboats being launched on sail days.
Mahalo for listening to our plea for a resolution to the Na Ho Holomoku sailing clubs Memorandum of
Understanding to keep our boats on the beach and easy access for our community.
Sincerely,
Rita Becker and Richard Brungard
