My name is Abraham Escalante and I attend Kamehameha Schools Hawai'i campus. I was v —
recently able to participate in a camp that Na Hoa Holomoku of Hawai'i Yacht Club hosted.The
class targeted youth and taught them a valuable skill: how to sail. My dad always loved sailing
and wanted all his children to learn how to sail.The location and affordability of the class
offered by Na Hoa Holomuku made that possible for me. As a kanaka maoli, I have always had
the urge to learn to sail and navigate as my ancestors did.The sailing club, for me, offers a
gateway to learning how to sail the "old way."
This class also opened the opportunity for competition. In the club, we can race each other
and race against other islands' sailing clubs. Thirty-four US colleges, including UH Manoa, offer
scholarships for sailing. Also, this could be a gateway into the Olympics as sailing is an Olympic
sport.
Now the club may have to close. If this happens, it will make it a lot more difficult for the keiki
of Hawai'i Island to learn how to sail.The knowledge that I and other young sailors have
gained will be put to the back of our minds until the next time we may or may not get on a
boat. Because we aren't practicing this skill, we may never become good sailors. Parents who
want their children to learn these skills may never have the opportunity to see them sail or sail
with them. So, in conclusion, please let Na Hoa Holomuku sailing club continue for the benefit
of future sailors.
