I am writing on behalf of Noa Hoa Holomoku Sailing Club of Hawaii. I have been a member co —
of this sailing club for four years and a board member for 2 1/2 years.
This club introduced me to sailing—in fact if not for NHH I would have never learned how to
sail.NHH not only taught me how to sail but introduced me to a wonderful community of
boaters. When my 32 foot sailboat broke its mooring and ended up on the rocks more than 10
people showed up to help get gear off the boat and try to get her floating. The boat was a
goner, but the fact that so many people came to help was heartwarming.
NHH is one of the only yacht/sailing club's that makes sailing truly accessible to the general
public. With a basic membership of only $70 a year NHH recognizes that sailing SHOULD be
accessible to everyone.
The club has gained momentum since I joined 4 years ago. On a sailing day it is not
uncommon for most of the single handed boats to be launched.
In a addition, having an organized presence on the wailoa side of the drainage ditch, has an
impact on illicit activity. I believe this area of Hilo Bayfront would be less safe if NHH did not
occupy the space it does.
Hilo Bay is highly under utilized and it would be a shame if an organization that promotes
boating safety as well as ocean recreation were to lose its location and in effect be disbanded
due to the county's refusal to grant them long term use of their current site.
