COW*VI I
Hello, Hilo City Council!
I am writing to thank you for your support for the Hilo Sailing Club (Na Hoa Holomoku/NHH).
I've been a member of NHH for two years and have found the organization to be an incredibly
exceptional benefit for all Hawaii residents and visitors.
I am a retired US Navy Chief Petty Officer and a retired Federal employee who relocated to
lower Puna in 2016. I've served at Kalani Honua Retreat Center as the Maintenance Project
Coordinator since my arrival.
I learned about NHH after sending an email to UH Hilo to inquire about their sailing curriculum.
I was astounded to learn that any individual - or family- can join NHH for$70.00 a YEAR - with
no other use fees - and that NHH offers free sailing lessons and sailing competitions at no
additional cost to members or their families!! a c
CI C.,
NHH offers amazing sailing benefits that far exceed those that any US Military installation
offers our military members, in my many years of US military experience worldwide. c, —+

For instance, if and when Pearl Harbor and MCB Kaneohe do have sailing options available,
they typically charge between $15 and $30 per hour rental fees on their boats - not includin cr—
instruction. Thus, NHH members annual family membership fees including instruction, are - D>
equal to one or two days of sail boat rental fees at our military bases - without instruction!) D

I've been an active participant in sailing organizations at a number of military bases over the
years and I have found NHH to have a number of senior members that are far more
knowledgable and experienced sailors than the military bases offered. And those NHH
members are exceptionally generous with their time in helping others to learn the skills, joys,
and science of sailing - without charging anyone any fees at all.
Because of NHH, I've been able to introduce many others to the awesome recreational
experiences of sailing on Hilo Bay. While some of those became active members of NHH, all
(including ages 6 years to mid-70's and many ethnicities, races, and nationalities) enjoyed
lifetime memories of the exceptional peace, beauty and joy of sailing in Hawaii.
Thank you very sincerely for you support of NHH and for ensuring the people of Hawaii do not
lose this amazing Big Island treasure.
