My perspective is that of a parent raising my children to know, understand, and value their Hawaiian culture. Knowledge of sailing was once widespread among Hawaiians and was vital for fishing and transportation. My husband and I have a strong desire to cultivate this traditional knowledge in our children. It has been difficult • because today sailing has largely become a pastime for the wealthy. The nonprofit Na Hoa Holomoku has benefited my family through opportunities to learn and practice sailing and by providing access to the club's boats. The camaraderie among Na Hoa Holomoku members has given us a supportive social group within which our children are taught and nurtured. Na Hoa Holomoku benefits Hawaii County with monthly beach clean ups and by maintaining a positive presence on the beach. Surrounding retailers benefit from increased spending in their places of business. Mahalo to Hawaii County for making appropriate accommodation for paddling canoes at Hilo Bay. I encourage you to extend your malama to Na Hoa Holomoku and provide the rising generation of Hawaiians the chance to come to know this important aspect of their ancestors' experience. This issue is on the agenda for the Aug 7, 2018 County Council meeting. Please support Big Island sailing. Mahalo, Merrily Wolf PO Box 1499 Kurtistown, HI 96760 Comm.
