Your Committee on Public Works and Parks and Recreation,to which was referred Bill No. 170,
reports as follows:
Bill No. 170,transmitted by Allan G. Simeon, Director of Public Works, via Communication 998
dated July 11, 2018, amends Chapter 24, Article 10, Division 2, of the Hawai`i County Code
1983 (2016 Edition, as amended), relating to Moving Vehicles, Section 24-264, Schedule 12,
(Stop intersections),paragraph(a) Hamakua, is amended to add a new listing to read: "Hauola Road,
Pohakea Road intersection, all approaches."
Director Simeon stated the intent of this amendment is to address a concern that motorists traveling
southwest(mauka) on Pohakea Road have difficulty seeing to the left and exiting at the Hauola Road
intersection. The local community police officer suggested the conversion of this intersection to an
all-way stop to help reduce accidents. The proposed all-way stop will allow for cars to still park along
Hauola Road and minimize the line of sight requirements at the intersection.
Your Committee on Public Works and Parks and Recreation is in accord with the purpose and intent of
Bill No. 170, and recommends its passage on first reading.
