();:ii;7,*°.f N,' <br /> COUNTY OF HAWAII ISTATE OF HAWAII <br /> •RESOLUTION NO. 668 18 <br /> A RESOLUTION TRANSFERRING/APPROPRIATING AN APPROPRIATION OUT <br /> AND FROM A DESIGNATED FUND ACCOUNT AND CREDITING SAME TO A <br /> DESIGNATED FUND ACCOUNT TO PROVIDE A GRANT TO THE FRIENDS OF <br /> HOKULE`A AND HAWAI`ILOA FOR THE HOKULE`A'S CEREMONIAL RETURN <br /> OF NA POHAKU TO PU'UKOHOLA HEIAU IN WEST HAWAII. <br /> WHEREAS,members of the Polynesian Voyaging Society sailed the Hokulea around <br /> the world on a historic three-year voyage, called the Malama Honua Worldwide Voyage, that <br /> explored and built global partnerships with the goal to improve our oceans and"Island Earth"; <br /> and <br /> WHEREAS,the Malama Honua World Wide Voyage carried Na Pohaku aboard the <br /> Hokule`a from the Pu`ukohola Heiau and Mauna Kea as its anchor, thus securing the Hokule`a to <br /> the Hawaiian Islands throughout its three year journey; and <br /> WHEREAS,the Hokulea crew members will return Na Pohaku to the Pu`ukohola <br /> Heiau during a ceremony that represents significant cultural value to all of Hawai`i; and <br /> WHEREAS, the Friends of Hokule`a and Hawai`iloa is a 501(c)(3) nonprofit <br /> organization whose mission is to teach and perpetuate the Hawaiian traditions of building, <br /> restoring, and caring for canoes; and <br /> WHEREAS, the Friends of Hokule`a and Hawai`iloa is requesting funds to assist with <br /> reimbursement costs for food, drinks, and supplies for the crew members of the Hokule`a, for the <br /> ceremonial return of Na Pohaku to Pu`ukohola Heiau in August 2018; and <br /> WHEREAS, one of the goals of the Department of Parks and Recreation is to facilitate <br /> opportunities, such as this culturally significant and educational event,that meet the needs of the <br /> Big Island community <br /> while maintaining the cultural uniqueness of our rich heritage and <br /> diversity; and <br /> WHEREAS,pursuant to Section 2-139(a)(2)(A) of the Hawaii County Code, <br /> Contingency Relief funds shall be transferred to an accepting County department/agency via <br /> resolution identifying the nonprofit organization and the specific program, project, event, <br /> activity, service, equipment, materials, or supplies for which the grant shall be used; now, <br /> therefore, <br /> BE IT RESOLVED BY THE COUNCIL OF THE COUNTY OF HAWAII that <br /> Contingency Relief funds from Council District 8 will be appropriated to the Department of <br /> Parks and Recreation to provide a grant to The Friends of Hokule`a and Hawai`iloa for the <br /> Hokulea's ceremonial return of Na Pohaku to the Pu`ukohola Heiau in West Hawai`i. <br />
