Dear Chairman Arakaki:
RE: Bill 97 (Lanihau Center Venture)
I am writing with respect to Bill 97 which I understand is on the agenda for
Second Reading at Wednesday's Council Meeting (8/11/99). Due to the prior scheduling
of a pair ofBoard of Director's meetings which I must chair, I regret that I will not be
able to be in Hilo to attend on August 11.
We have appreciated the unanimous support of the Planning Commission, the
Council's Planning Committee, and the full Council on the First Reading of the Bill. I
attended all these meetings as I wanted to be able to personally address whatever
questions may have been raised.
I am hopeful that the Council will act on this bill at this meeting. However, if any
Council members should have questions or concerns with respect to considering this Bill
on Second Reading, I would respectfully request that in such event you please defer
action until your next meeting on August 25. Should this occur, I would make a point of
attending that meeting.

with the other members of the Council.
