This letter is sent in support of the Resolution Suppo ling and
Encouraging the Establishment and Ongoing Work of the Tropical
~ Reforestation and Ecosystem Education (TREE) Center in t e Kona
District.
I am kama'aina of Kona and I participated with the stu y group
formed in conjunction with Public Law 102-574, the Hawaii Trapi al Forest
Recovery Action Plan, which recommends that a center for the r storation
and perpetuation of forests in Hawaii be established.
The part of Kona which I am kama'aina of contains some f the last
and finest remaining dryland forests in Hawaii and our family has long
recognized their vulnerability and need for protection and restor tion. We
" ' have worked both individually and as members of the com unity to
advance their recovery and perpetuation. It pleases me that th Tropical
Reforestation and Ecosystem Education (TREE) Center was f rmed in
~ Kona and is wholly devoted to accomplishing the recommendati ns of the
11r«1 1R"y~ Hawai'i Tropical Forestry Recovery Action Plan, which is compli entary t0
the work being done in the dryland forests.
The work of TREE is unique in the nation and its efforts enhance
„ „ the work of private citizens end governmental agencies, of forest iologists
and ecotourism providers. TREE is good for the local ecology. TREE is
good for the local economy. Thank you for your support nd your
encouragement. Thank you for your recognition.
