I received a letter tram the Kona•Kohala Chamber of Commerce informing ms that the Public Works
Committee at its Juiy 27'" meeting will ba discussing the possible elimination of all parking on Haflekii
Street from Mamalahoa Highway to Mamao Street In Kealakekue. Aa one of the buslneassa located along
this affetted settion of Halekii Street, I am surpfised and object to it being considered without any notice
from the County. '
As the only day care center in West Hawair. we care for approximately forty clients with a staff on nine
employees. Parking on site is an issue since we try to make available parking spaces for clients`family tq
drop oft and/or pick up their family member. As a resuh, we have some of our employees perk on the
meet.
In addition, we have regular volunteers who assist our clients and provide entertainment. intermediate and
high school students who make educational nips to our center, and wa make our conference room
available for such groups as the Alzheimer's support group, the State Department of Health/County Case
Management Interdisciplinary Teem meeting, the Caregivers support group, and other community
organlutlons and groups. All of these indiwiau9ls oftentimes park on the street.
If on-street perking is eliminated, there would ba no alten[ative parking available unless the County is
contempWtinq providing an siumafive parking area that 1 am not awaro of.
the esteDlishment of a stoplight has been mentioned as the reason for the elimination of on-street parking,
but I do not see the eonneetion between the two. We are in our 11'" year of operation end haven't heard
of any problems with on-street parking ao the link with the stoplight is without merit We notice that
there are Instances when people park on the street because the post office parking lot. located across the
aveet from us. is full.
I strongly urge the Public Works Committee io disapprove the proposal to remove all psrkinq on Halekli
Street from Mamalahoa Highway to Mamao Street.
