Date: Monday,October 15,2018 8:27:07 AM County Council: I'm worried to death about the intended and unintended consequences of Bill 108 restricting vacation rentals. The immediate economic impact on tens of thousands of Hawaii Island residents is unknown at this time, but will most certainly affect the lower income and middle class workers who rely on vacation rentals as their primary source of income,be it the housecleaner, handyman, gardener, property manager,or homeowner just struggling to get by,not to mention the real estate market and the flow of property taxes to the county. Can you please put a hold on your vote until a legitimate economic impact study is conducted? The Big Island is not a one size fits all scenario for an ordinance such as this.Rural areas across the island have their own micro economies to deal with that are solely based on tourism. This bill benefits the wealthy who can afford to own in a resort zone and punishes the middle class population who should be allowed an income stream from their private properties. What is the rush? Please do the right thing and press pause on this bill. The affects could be disastrous for the longterm recovery of lower Puna, and for countless other rural communities on our island.
