HomeMy WebLinkAboutCOM 0739.340 2016-2018 p/pc, COUNTY CLERK COW,751 COUNTY OF HAWAII RECEIVED From: Carolyn Green Time By To: Council Testimony Date Subject: BILL 108 Date: Tuesday,October 16,2018 7:48:21 AM To Whom It May Concern: I am writing as I am currently off-island seeking treatment for breast cancer. I have been a resident of Hawaii for the past 7 years in Kapoho Vacationland. A few years ago we also bought an ag property within Kapoho Farm lots and created a business for our farm growing fruits and vegetables. When I come to the mainland, I was renting my house as a vacation rental in order to help offset it's cost. I have been diligent about paying all applicable taxes and have been operating according to all state laws. I did this,to start, because the house was already an existing rental property when I bought it, so I maintained a schedule of renting during the summer and fall months I am away. On June 4, 2018, after my family and I were evacuated,we lost our home and our farm to the lava flow. We came to Boston and I have had a double mastectomy, radiation and continued care. We • only now have received part of our insurance settlement for our loss. We have plane tickets to return to Hawaii on January 4th 2019 per my plan with my doctors for my care and when we expect to have our insurance payments in hand. My kids will restart school at Malamalama on January 8th Our plan is to purchase another home in the Puna or Hilo area to live as we have been doing. If this bill passes, I will be unable to purchase a home on the island of Hawaii. I will not be able to sustain a property with the high cost of living without the ability to rent my home when I travel with my family, which is always our plan. I sit on the Board for the Malamalama School and promote the businesses of Puna to my friends and family both on island and those visiting from all over the world. Please consider those of us who live on the island as legal residents, but travel and use our homes during those time to supplement our income.
