Good Morning Council Members,
My name is Moani Akana and I am here to testify in favor of Resolution 718-18. Due to a
previous appointment in Kona I am unable to testify in person so humbly submit this written
testimony.
I support Resolution 718-18 contingency fund award towards the 43rd Annual Paniolo Parade
and Ho'olaule'a in Waimea for the following reasons.
These events showcase our local ranch families as they perpetuate 4th generation pa'u riders
and paniolo. Long time ranching family names such as Ho'opai, Keakealani, Bertelmann and
Ha'o share their love of this lifestyle taught to them by their parents and grandparents. They
are the people of the aina, from mauka to makai,they are our future and Resolution 718-18
ensures that our rich culture continues.
It is also a time when our schools,halau and churches participate either as Parade participants,
food vendors or craft vendors. This is a vehicle for local nonprofits to fund raise and for the
townsfolk to enjoy each other's company.
Like many other worthy nonprofit organizations we write yearly grants however it is never
enough. This is where the contingency fund award is valuable as it supplements our events'
expenses such as narrating stations, sound system equipment throughout town, our Special
Duty Police, the Road Crew and Roving Marshals, etc. More importantly, it ensures we
continue our efforts to perpetuate our unique culture.
