;,HEREAS, the LEAGUE OF WOMsffi VOTERS is a national
non-partisan women's organization established in 1920
whose fundamental mission is to promote political
responsibility through informed and active participation
of citizens in government throughout the United States
of America; and
V;3EREAS, the LEAGUE OF WOMEN VOTERS has established
local leagues in the State of Hawaii; and
I:HZRIiAS, the LEAGUE OF WOK4d VOTERS of Hawaii County
was organized in 1965 to serve the people of the County
of dawaii; and
WHERFAS, it is the belief of the League that good
government is only possible through an informed and
politically active electorate and to this end has undertaken
several projects which have accentuated, but not limited to,
timely issues such as environmental quality, county planning,
county government and has activated citizen participation
in government through voter education and voter registration;
and
WHEREAS, the League initiated the preparation and
publication of the booklets, 4KDow your County" and the
"Voters Guile," to help educate our citizens in the election
process and procedures and thus the achievement of a more
responsible and responsive society; and
WH&REAS, the League's activity in the voter registration
program within the high schools and colieges on this island
and at many of the business and commercial centers has been
largely responsible for this County's record high voter
turnout; and
WIWkSAS, because tf its diligent efforts and enthusiasm,
Hawaii County has been successful in the large number of
youths, lb years old and over, to become qualified voters in
1972;
o
NOW, THEREFORE, BE IT RESOLVED BY THE COUNCIL OF THE
COUNTY OF HAWAII that the members of the LaAGUE OF WOMEN
VOTERS of the County of Hawaii be and they are hereby
commended for their innumerable and invaluable contributions
to good government, and the Council expresses its appreciation
to the LEAGUE. OF WOMEN VOTERS of Hawaii County for the
kokua and benefits extended to the citizenry of the County
of Hawaii; and
BE IT FURTHER RESOLVED that certified copies of this
resolution be transmitted to Mrs. Dale Bachman, President
of the League of Women Voters of Hawaii County; Mrs. Trudi
Zelko, Chairman, State Voter Service; Mrs. Donald Brenner,
President, League of Women Voters of Hawaii; and Mrs. Lucy
Benson, President, League of Women Voters of the United
States of America.
