Resolution No. S' t
WHEREAS, the County of Hawaii is charged with the duty
to maintain the health, welfare and safety of the people of
the County; and
WHEREAS, adequate hospital facilities and staff personnel
are recognized as being essential to the health, welfare and
safety of the people of the County of Hawaii; and
WHEREAS, the people of the County of Hawaii have expressed
grave concern over the closing of medical and surgical beds as
a result of the critical shortage of registered and practical
nurses and other vital personnel; and
WHEREAS, the health, welfare and safety of the people of
the County of Hawaii are imperiled by the emergency admission
situation now existing whereby only life-threatening cases are
being admitted for care,
NOW, THEREFORE, BE IT RESOLVED BY THE COUNCIL OF THE
COUNTY OF HAWAII that the Honorable John A. Burns, Governor
of the State of Hawaii, and the Director of the Department
of Health, State of Hawaii, be requested to immediately hire
sufficient nursing and other vital personnel to alleviate
the dangerous situation now imperiling our hospital system
and enable the County of Hawaii to provide for the health,
welfare and safety of its people.
BE IT FURTHER RESOLVED that the County Clerk forward
copies of this resolution to the Honorable John A. Burns,
Governor of the State of Hawaii; Dr. Walter Quisenberry,
Director of Health, Department of Health; Frank Keifer,
Administrative Director, Hawaii County Hospital System;
Dr. DeWitt Smith, President, Hawaii County Medical Society;
Mrs. Carol Murasaki, President, Hawaii County Nurses Association;
Mrs. Jane Talbott, President, Hawaii Nurses Association;
Dr. Walter Batchelder, District Health Officer, Hawaii
District, Department of Health.
