We have owned these buildings for more than 30 years. Now that we are retired, the rental income from our tenants in these buildings provides the monthly income for our living expenses. Our tenants are now struggling to survive financially, due to challenges from the impact of the lava flow in lower Puna. In order to help them in these past months, we have offered free rent and 1/2 rent for the months of June through September. Our normal income for those four months would have been $14,400. Instead it was $4,650, one-third! One new tenant has asked us to sign a promissory note in lieu of future rents owed until he has the ability to resume payments. Our financial well being has been substantially impacted., and we have been forced to draw upon our retirement savings in order to meet living expenses. We know that property taxes for homeowners in lower Puna were substantially reduced in August. We were surprised to see that the reduction was not applied to us as commercial property owners in Pahoa, who have also suffered financial loss. We are extremely grateful to Councilwoman Eileen O'Hara for introducing Resolution 690-18, and hope that the Council will vote to accept it.
