Dear Eileen O'Hara and Council Members,
We have been residents of beautiful, quiet, community-oriented Leilani Estates for 9 years. We have
been unable to live in our home, at 13-811 Malama St. The involuntary evacuation zone. We both have
suffered from PTSD due to the eruption on May 3rd, 2018 when we were woken up to the roar of the lava,
sirens,flashing lights and loudspeakers. A kind friend offered her home to us in Kapoho that we were
also evacuated from in the middle of the night to the same nightmare of sirens.
We are now able to freely come and go to our home. The streets are still not repaired. We are working
when we can to repair our home however it's a struggle to feel like we are home and safe.
Please, please do not consider opening our residential neighborhood to tourist to view the loss of our
dear friends and neighbors homes! The devastation here should NOT be set as a modern-day natural
disaster freak show.
You will be opening up a fresh wound by letting people drive around our
neighborhood pushing the limits and entering our properties to get a "better" view.
Even if there is a specific viewing area you know people are curious and will want to explore on their own.
We want the tourist to come to Hawaii and see the wonders of nature but not at our expense. These
tours will not be welcomed guests by many residents. Is this what we want tourist to experience? Angry
residents? I think not.
Please, respectfully DONOT allow tours to invade what we have left of our privacy.
