P/GREDC COMM. 1073
OCTOBER 2,2018-HILO MTG
Aloha,County of Hawai'i Council members:
My regrets that I am unable to attend your committee meetings Tuesday in which you will discuss, among other
things,Resolution 690-18 and Communication 1073.
Please note that I fully support both'measures, and, regarding the commercial tax relief proposal in particular,I am
grateful to Puna Councilwoman Eileen O'Hara for her efforts to follow-up on requests from community members,
like myself, seeking commercial tax relief for our suffering Puna businesses.
Sadly, since I last spoke before Council members making this suggestion,Sandra Baker, who also spoke, had to
make the tough call to shut down her Pahoa business. It's a sobering reminder that our economy has yet to rebound
from the devastation that the lava brought on all of us.It makes me so sad to see a fellow Pahoa merchant throw in
the towel.
Please do what you can to prevent more casualties among the Puna businesses and the brick-and-mortar businesses
that are doing anything and everything to keep the village alive.Please,please,please.
That leads me to Communication 1073,and my support for that conversation to be had. Thanks ahead for talking
about a lava viewing program.I honestly cannot believe we don't have such a program in full effect yet. It's cause
for constant inner dialogue and a conversation many of us have been having with each other out here in Puna.
People should be able to come see the lava if they want.Personally,I need more time to heal from the pain and
sadness of the loss of my home before I feel like hiking over what destroyed it.But I don't think people should be
protected from themselves,if they really have a desire to see Mother Nature at her most gruesome and awe-
inspiring.Just be sure to put up some"proceed at your own risk"and"no trespassing"signs.
Thank you for agendizing both issues, and please be on the lookout for any way you can help stimulate the Puna
economy.Supporting both measures is a positive step.
Again,my deepest apologies for having to miss out on your discussion Tuesday.
As always,I wish you well.
With aloha,
Tiffany Edwards Hunt
