HomeMy WebLinkAboutRES 549 Draft 01 1969-1972k RESOLUTION N0 . , 649 WHEREASm, JESSE KUHAULUA of Happy Valley, County of Maui and State of Hawaii, a star football player at Baldwin nigh School in Maui during his high school days, actively and unselfishly trained and engaged in the sport of Sumo for eight long years; and WHEREAS, Sumo, the national sport of Japan, has been a part of the culture of Hawaii for many years; and WHEREAS,. in the summer of 1972, JESSE KUHAULUA, under the Sumo name of Takamiyama, won the Sumo Surer Tournament at Nagoya, Japan, with 13 wins and only 2 losses; and WHEREAS, said JESSE KUHAULUA is the first foreign -born person to win a major Sumo tournament in Japan; and iEFEAS, he has attained the rank of Maegashira and will be promoted to a higher rank prior to competition in the Autumn Tournament in Japan; and WHEREAS, said JFSSE.KUHA.ULUA has, through his dedication to his work, earned the lasting admiration and respect of all of the people of the world and particularly all of the people of Hawaii; NOW, THEREFORE, BE IT RESOLVED BY THE COUNCIL OF THE COUNTY OF HAWAII that it joins all the people of the State of Hawaii and the world in extending to JESSE KUHAULUA its warmest "Mahalo" for the many worthwhile and enduring contributions he has made toward the betterment of the sport of Sumo and the recognition and pride bestowed upon the people of Hawaii; and BE IT FURTHER RESOLVED that the Clerk of the County of Hawaii be and is hereby directed to transmit a true copy of this resolution to JESSE KUFAULUA as evidence of the County Council's deep appreciation and respect for his unceasing devotion and sensitivity to the human needs of our island communities and that it further extends to him its warmest best wishes for future success in his Sumo career and in furthering human relations.
