As a resident of the Hawaiian Shores Recreation neighborhood, I support Resolution 732-18.
When the lava flow destroyed roads and threatened homes and lives, Beach Road/Papio Street
became the only evacuation route for thousands of people. It was heartbreaking, day after day,
seeing all those frantic people, desperate to get their families, pets and belongings to safety. My
neighbors and I felt deeply for the people impacted by the lava flow and we were grateful that there
was an evacuation route and people were able to get out of the danger zones in time.
Later,when the evacuations were complete,the Sanford cinder trucks began using the route on a
daily basis for multiple back and forth trips. Although the noise and potential safety issues were
bothersome, I think that most people in the neighborhood understood that Sanford Cinder Company
needed to continue operating and there was no alternative route for their trucks to get cinder in and
out of the area. We understood that it was an emergency,short term situation.
Several months have now passed,the lava flow has stopped and the time has come for a more
permanent solution.
Beach Road cannot continue to be the only route in and out of that area. It is unacceptable and it is
potentially dangerous. The neighborhood streets in Hawaiian Shores Recreation area were never
designed to sustain this kind of traffic...the roads are being destroyed and pedestrian safety is a
serious and ongoing concern. In addition, people need who were displaced by the lava need access
to their farms and homes so that they can begin rebuild their lives.
I respectfully urge you to move forward with the proposals outlined in Resolution No. 732-18. It is
time to do the right thing for the people of Puna.
