Aloha all,
I'm a resident of Hawaiian Beaches/Shores,also a resident which boarders Kahala/Railroad.I had my home prior to
the 2014 lava flow.We bought here because of what a lovely neighborhood it was,and generally quiet it was as
well.
When the 2014 Flow happened and threatened to cut off access to 130,we knew that our street would in short
become a highway of sorts.Our peace and quiet as well as our safety and our children's safety would be
jeopardized.However we made peace knowing that there were essentially no other options.
Now this proposal is to move the current usable path along Beach rd,to a privately owned street like Papio to
Kahala/Railroad.Beach/Papio has been no stranger to traffic as myself traversed this road frequently prior to the
lava eruption on May 3rd.This is why there are speed bumps in place.However Kahala was never intended as a
through passage.These streets like essentially all others with the exception of where Beach rd connects into Beaches
and Shores are dead end streets.Resident bought for a specific reason.
Now regaining access is NOT limited to entering Shores from Kahala,nor is it limited to entering Nanawale.Tho
it's safe to assume that if people had an option they choose the nicer and paved roads of Shores/Beaches.It appears
to be in the makai side of Nanawale by Lava Tree you could cut over and connect to the Old Railroad passage that
heads makai,and be a new bypass to the lava and primary route.This would not impact or hurt either subdivisions.
Nor would it negatively impact property values to us who have homes in the immediate path.
Kahala on Shores side is a sleepy quiet street where children can safely ride their bikes,and people can walk without
worry.Taking traffic through this strip of residential area up to Kahakai is basically rerouting the traffic from an
already established location that is aware of and known for through traffic...to an area which was not intended for
such.
Furthermore,That stretch of Kahakai is prone to excessive speeding and reckless drivers. So now we will be having
not only general population but large/oversized trucks pulling out onto the road.The upside about Papio is that there
is only one street past and a park in front.Cars naturally must go slower in this area.
So if you go through with this will you be officially installing the light?Thus people who are already impatient and
speeding will then be ripping through side streets making what is already and unsafe situation worse while creating
more traffic on those streets that only see homeowners of that area typically.
Lastly regarding Shores/Beaches,we have a school on the road.We have keiki walking home on the sides of the
roads and general people walking/jogging.While all this traffic already is passing daily...is this the safest option for
people?No.We don't have sidewalks or safe areas for people to walk as it is.
The answer is not cutting into either neighborhoods,and disrupting more people than have already been impacted.
The answer is finding a long term solution for everyone down there that is dedicated for them.They deserve that just
as residents of both Subdivision don't deserve their streets turning into a temporary highway.This should be able to
be done just as quickly as proposed solutions..since you need permission from property owners as it stands.
