Dear County Council,
Please vote yes on Res 732-18 to make repaving the roads a priority for lower Puna, Puna
residents need to return to their normal lives including access to their homes and work so its
crucial to get the roads re openened for those afffected.
and please vote NO on bill 108 regarding vacation rentals.
Many Puna residents depend on vacation rentals as a crucial source of income. They do not
need more restrictions placed on this crucial part of our local economy. Some say that
regulating or getting rid of vacation rentals will increase affordable housing
but there's no evidence of this and these are 2 separate issues. There is no guarantee or way to
force a resident to rent out their property on a long term basis vs use it as a vacation rental.
There are other bills that can help make more affordable long term housing
such as the Tiny house bill which would make it easier for local residents to build and live in
their own affrodable tiny houses. Also the sustainable living research bill would make it easier
for locals to join together and live on larger
parcels of land and share the costs and be able to build their own houses using more
sustainable and more affordable methods than what is currently allowed in the building code.
Until those happen, many local residents depend on income from renting out their xextra
rooms, studios or ohana units or other homes they own as vacation rentals and all the tourists
need somewhere to go. The alternative would be more corporate hotels all over the Big Island
and that would ruin the charm and beauty of the big island in my opinion. People that visit Big
island do not want a Waikiki expeirence,they want to experience staying in real peoples'
homes and more off grid.
