I am a freqent visitor to the Big Island, having stayed in small and friendly places in
Volcano and Waimea, and most recently in Kona, where I stayed in a large,
impersonal condominium complex. I understand that Bill 108 requires owners
outside resort zones to be present around the clock, or to have someone else present.
While the larger hotels can afford staff around the clock, it will be difficult for
others who support themselves from short term vacation rentals to stay in business
should this bill pass. In addition, the ripple effect on restaurants and other small
businesses in East Hawai'i will force them to close as well, and there will be
decreased tax revenues, and fewer visitors will choose to come Hawai'i, as a result.
As someone who loves the Big Island, especially the smaller more intimate places
to stay, as in Volcano, I am against the passage of Bill 108.
