Although it is a problem for our organization -- it is ultimately a GREAT problem!! We are glad that so many of our island's fifth grade girls want to spend a day `fl "exploring math and science." The purpose of AAUW, the organization that sponsors GEMS, is to "advance equity for women and girls and the purpose of GEMS is to "expand the girls' awareness of career opportunities and to increase their interest in their math and science classes". GEMS is a one day experience for fifth grade girls. They have the opportunity to spend the day interacting with math/science career women and high school students who spend their days devoted to math/science endeavors. We have learned that the fifth grade girls really LOVE the high school girls. We are so happy that our State Supreme Court has made a positive decision on the Thirty Meter Telescope (TMT) challenge. TMT has been one of our greatest supporters. They not only donate money to GEMS every year they also send us an Engineer to lead one of our Workshops. Our thanks again to Dru Kanuha for his direct support of GEMS and to the rest of the County Council for your continued support. On behalf of the fifth grade girls of West Hawaii who are able to attend this special event I say-- "thank you"!! Thanks and Aloha, Cindy Armer, GEMS Chairperson Comm. No. 102 Ref.
