Resolution No. 31f,)
WHEREAS, the Island of Oahu is privileged to host a number
of major sports attractions annually, including the Hula Bowl,
Islander Baseball games, the Rainbow Classic, the Aloha Basketball
Tournament, State High School Basketball (Class AA) Tournament,
and others; and
WHEREAS, the people of the Island of Hawaii have had
relatively few opportunities to enjoy sports competition at its
best; and
WHEREAS, basketball has long been known to be one of the
most favored spectator sports on the Island of Hawaii; and
WHEREAS, support by the people of the Island of Hawaii for
the sport of basketball is extensively and continuously felt
Statewide and credited with the development of the sport to the
esteemed status it holds in the community today; and
WHEREAS, previous State Basketball (Class AA) Tournaments,
as a part of a Statewide interscholastic sports program, have always
been successful financially when held in Hilo; and
WHEREAS, the continuation of regular State Basketball
Tournaments in Hilo will be a rare and welcomed opportunity for
the people of Hawaii County to enjoy the excitement, drama and
color of High School Basketball at its finest; and
WHEREAS, the continuation of regular State Basketball
Tournaments in Hilo will bring to the citizenry of the Big Island
that increased measure of civic pride and optimism so important
to the continuing development and economic prosperity of the
County and the sport of basketball; and
WHEREAS, high school basketball players throughout our
State will benefit from the opportunity to add to their knowledge
of sportsmanship, fair play and competitive spirit in their
travel to Hilo; and
WHEREAS, the Hawaii High School Athletic Association is
scheduled to deliberate on the question of location for all
future State High School Basketball Tournaments in the near
future;
NOW, THEREFORE, BE IT RESOLVED that we, the County Council
of the County of Hawaii, do hereby strongly encourage and request
the Hawaii High School Athletic Association to consider the
scheduling of State High School Basketball Tournaments on the
Island of Hawaii every three years, and pledges its whole -hearted
support and cooperation in continuing this Tournament in Hilo
and extends to the Hawaii High School Athletic Association
whatever services and aid it is empowered to offer; and
BE IT FURTHER RESOLVED that this Resolution be directed
to the Hawaii High School Athletic Association, the Big Island
Interscholastic Federation, the State Board of Education,
Shunichi Kimura, Mayor of the County of Hawaii, and the members
of the State Legislature from the Island of Hawaii.
