Resolution No. 362
RESOLUTION OF THE COUNTY COUNCIL OF THE COUNTY OF HAWAII, STATE
OF HAWAII, SUPPORTING PROPOSED AMENDMENTS TO THE SUGAR ACT OF
19489 AS AMENDED.
WHEREAS, the cultivation of sugarcane and its processing
into raw sugar is the economic and social cornerstone of the
County of Hawaii; and
WHEREAS, 3,648 men and women are employed in sugar production
in this county on a year-round basis; and
WHEREAS, many thousands of other men, women and children
are either directly or indirectly dependent upon the production
of sugar for their livelihoods; and
WHEREAS, employment in sugar in 1970 generated $25,641,769
in direct annual payrolls to the employees of the ten sugar
companies operating in this county; and
WHEREAS, should it become unfeasible to continue to cultivate
sugarcane in this county, we know of no other use of the land which
could replace the benefits provided by the sugar industry; and
WHEREAS, the present sugar act has assured and provided the
consumers of America stable supplies of sugar at reasonable prices;
and
WHEREAS, the present sugar act has provided the stability
for long term planning essential to the production of sugar in
this county; and
WHEREAS, the extension of the Sugar Act of 1948, as amended,
is presently being considered by the Congress of the United States
of America,
NOW, THEREFORE, BE IT RESOLVED BY THE COUNCIL OF THE COUNTY
OF HAWAII that it supports the vigorous efforts of Hawaii's
representatives in the Congress of the United States of America
to extend the Sugar Act of 1948, as amended, with further amend-
ments proposed by the U. S. Sugar Industry at hearings before
the Committee on Agriculture of the House of Representatives of
the Congress of the United States of America as outlined in the
statements dated March 26 and April 30, 1971 and attached here-
with; and
BE IT FURTHER RESOLVED that certified copies of this
resolution be transmitted to The Honorable Hiram L. Fong,
The Honorable Daniel K. Inouye, The Honorable Spark M. Matsunaga,
and The Honorable Patsy T. Mink, and also to Karl H. Berg,
President of the Hawaiian Sugar Planters' Association.
