Resolution No. 369
WHEREAS, the production of sugar is an essential
agricultural industry to the Island of Hawaii; and
WHEREAS, the continuance of sugar production at Pepeekeo
and Mauna Kea Sugar Companies will have a vital effect upon
the economic welfare of the Island of Hawaii and especially
upon the employees and independent growers whose cane is
processed by these plantations; and
WHEREAS, bagasse and other sugar cane trash have been
utilized for fuel and continuous utilization of these
materials will solve a serious ocean water pollution problem;
and
WHEREAS, the substitution of excess energy produced
from sugar bagasse and sugar cane trash as a fibrous fuel
for fuel oil will eliminate substantial fuel oil imports
to the Island;
NOW, THEREFORE, BE IT RESOLVED by the Council of the
County of Hawaii that the County of Hawaii hereby endorses
the efforts of all parties concerned to assure continuance
of sugar production at Pepeekeo and Mauna Kea Sugar Companies,
solve environmental problems, prevent waste and provide an
economical source of electric energy as a by-product, and
urges cooperation by various governmental authorities whose
action is required to carry out various aspects of this
program.
BE IT FURTHER RESOLVED that the County Clerk be
authorized and directed to forward a copy of this resolution
to all interested parties and governmental agencies necessary
to accomplish the purposes as set forth above.
