WHEREAS, the Mayor and the Council of Hawaii
County have jointly promoted a sister -city program to
foster friendship and understanding among all of the
peoples of the world, particularly those in the Pacific Basin;
a nd
WHEREAS, such a sister -city program would benefit the
people of the affiliated cities through the exchange of
cultural exhibits, educational programs, information relative
to economic development of mutual interest, and other matters;
and
WHEREAS, the Chinese community in the County of Hawaii
recognizes the desirability for greater mutual understanding
and cultural exchanges between the residents of the County of
Hawaii and the Republic of China; and
WHEREAS, the affiliation of the County of Hawaii, Island
of Hawaii,, with the City of Hualien, Taiwan, Republic of China.,
as sister cities was recommended,- and

WHEREAS, the Island of Hawaii and Hualien are similarly
blessed with natural beauty; and
WHEREAS., the County of Hawaii, Island of Hawaii, would be
pleased and honored to be affiliated with Hualien as a sister
city; and
WHEREAS., both legislative bodies of Hualien and the County
of Hawaii mutually have agreed to establish a sister—city
relationship; and
WHEREAS, both Hualien and Hawaii County have agreed that
the affiliation be effected on September 22, 1-01717
NOW THEREFORE, BE IT RESOLVED BY THE COUNCIL OF THE
COUNTY OF HAWAII that the County of Hawaii., Island of Hawaii.,
hereby officially recognizes the said affiliation with Hualien.
BE IT FINALLY RESOLVED THAT The Honorable Shunichi Kimura,
Mayor of the County of Hawaii, be and is hereby instructed to
present a copy of this resolution to the official representative
of Hualien., Taiwan., Republic of China.
