I have written testimony for every council meeting. It always falls in deaf ears. I do not understand why the
council cares about some more than others,why,as one council member says,that living the old ways
means more than being able to put food on tables... businesses are not important.Apparently tourism is not
part of Hawaii's culture if it does not involve a rich mainland owned hotel. Or that people who do not have
the capacity to call the police on noisy neighbors are given the power to put small business out of business. I
am not being dramatic of eccentric. My husband and I are making major life changes because the harm this
bill will do to us personally and our village overall.
After the last meeting,which I took an entire day from work to attend,the council completely ignored our
pleas-24 of us testified against-I spoke to my council,member as well as one of the sponsors of this bill.
No help is coming.No calls or messages returned.Instead of putting a provision to address the loss of
vacation rentals over time each and every community on this island has to fight their own individual battle.
Have you seen the general plan?Have you ever dealt with the small town politics that make up the
community"long range plans". You are doing a huge disservice to our island and I hold you personally
responsible when businesses suffer. When small businesses go under.And not just TVRs,we all depend on
this income source.
I am not going to waste another day testifying in person when I could be serving my guests. I have work to
do.I have bills to pay.I have a house to sell in order to afford to make the improvements needed to comply
with your bill.
If you are reading this,which I do not have much faith in,I hope you know that I do pay taxes. I paid them
the day I came to testify. The county never had a problem cashing my checks. I also vote. My hope is that
the new council members will provide more balance and refocus the council on the people,not just for their
friends on the council and in the lobbyists. One can dream!
